Bird Watching

Bhutan is considered as ‘Bird Watchers paradise’ because of its 670 types of bird species that have been recorded till date. Being Bhutan a part of eastern Himalayas, has been considered as one of the world’s top 10 biodiversity hotspot. About 50 species of birds migrate during winters which include waders, ducks, thrushes, finches, birds of prey, and buntings. Black necked Stork, Blackish breasted Blabber, Eurasian Curlew, Great Hornbill, Pallid Harrier, Blyth’s Kingfisher, Dark rumped Swift, White bellied Heron, Imperial Heron, Black necked Crane, Yellow rumped Honey guide, Woodsnipe, Ward’s Trogon, Satyr Tragopan are among the few endangered birds found in Bhutan.

The partial migrating birds to Bhutan are Cuckoos, Bee eater, Warblers and Flycatchers. The Chestnut breasted Partridge, Rufous throated Wren Babbler, Grey bellied Tragopan are among those which breed in Bhutan. There are many such birds in Bhutan which are facing the danger of getting extinct. Among the lot, Imperial Heron; which is one of the fifty rarest birds in the world and the rare Black necked Crane that breeds in Tibet and then migrates over Himalayas to Bhutan during winters and flies back to Tibet in the month of February and March.
